Introducing "Fire" in Make Modern Issue 40

I am so excited to share with you the newest PBJ design in Make Modern Magazine.

This is Make Modern's 40th issue! Congratulations Make Modern! The cover quilt is from designer Leanne Parson's of Devoted Quilter. You can find her on Instagram. Head over to give her a big congratulations on her first cover quilt!!

Meet Fire. A traditionally pieced, modern quilt designed for the new quilter and beyond.

I used Dutch Tulip from Cherrywood Hand Dyed Fabrics for this quilt. If you haven't heard of Cherrywood it is definitely a company you will want to check out. Their quilting cotton is hand dyed (of course) and looks like suede. It's gorgeous to work with and the colors are just saturated. I used yardage from each color in Dutch Tulip for Fire, though one of  them was just used for the binding.

Once the top was pieced I found the perfect Gutermann threads for quilting Fire and I began marking lines.

Lots and lots of lines.

I used my walking foot to quilt the entire quilt.

It took a long time, but it was so worth it.

I followed each section and I think it really helps bring your eye out from the center of the quilt to the edge.

Red binding to bring your eye to a stop at the edge of the quilt.

Fire finishes at 64" square. Use it to warm up under or as a statement piece in any room. Get Make Modern Issue 40 HERE.

Introducing Mod²!

A pretty little quilt I designed about a year ago. It sat in the graphing book until I saw one of the challenges as an Island Batik Ambassador was a modern quilt challenge. I dusted this baby off and sent it to the testers.

This version is the one I made for the challenge. I used the Blue Moon line I received from Island Batik as part of their ambassador program.

Such a fabulous line to work with. I included the layout for this quilt in the instructions, just in case anyone else wanted to step out of their comfort zone.

So glad she got these fence posts. They bring me back to summers in Montana.

My photographer, Kelly of Handmade Boy, brought both quilts with her on vacation to Colorado.

She put her husband to work, too. She's not getting these shots in Illinois!

The large quilt I quilted in a pretty green in a continuous circle that is NOT even.

The Island Batik version I quilted in long, vertical wavy lines, that are also NOT even.

Testers Quilts

Let's take a look at the tester's quilts. These lovely ladies deserve a round of applause for their work. They are such a great group to work with.

This beauty belongs to Fawn.  I love the prints she chose, but I can't decide if I like the butterfly or the blue best. Choices, choices!

Jennifer's purple beauty makes me drool, but I love purple in all of it's forms. Jennifer pointed out that these blocks go together much easier if we press the seams open. You know I'm a press the seams to the side kind of gal, but she was totally right. I left pressing arrows in the instructions, but I do recommend pressing open, it makes a difference. Thanks Jennifer!

I love the statement red makes in Joanne's quilt.  It's bold yet simple. Art in a quilt.

Dedee's goes bold in large blue chunks. The testers really showed the diversity this pattern has to offer. It's easy to make it yours.

Mod² is available now in my Etsy shop, at a special introductory price of $8. Digital only, but printed patterns coming soon.

Make it yours and share it with us: #modsquared

Modern Marks Blog Hop

Today is the first day of the Modern Marks Blog Hop.

If you are new to Patterns By Jen, welcome! I hope you enjoy your stop. Sew In Love With Fabric (Benartex's blog) has an interview with Christa to start off the blog hop. Don't miss the rest of the bloggers listed at the end of the post, and the giveaway!

Modern Marks is Christa Watson's first fabric line for Benartex.

The colors are bright and saturated. Pictures just don't do the fabric justice, you really have to have them in hand to appreciate the gorgeousness of this fabric collection.

I love a good, colorful selvage, don't you?

The fabric is like butter, really.  I don't wash my fabrics before I use them, and when the fabric is soft and easy to work with, it makes the process more enjoyable. There was very little "fraying" of the edges while I worked with them, too, and THAT is a huge selling point for me.

I designed Broken Panes to show off the large prints of Modern Marks. Christa's use of interesting and funky shapes within each color makes for great movement throughout each square.

The fabrics work really well in a big block quilt.

These colors just pop!

You can find a list of shops that carry Christa's Modern Marks HERE. If your local quilt shop doesn't carry them, you should definitely recommend it to them.

Thank you, Christa for the great fabrics to work with. The color, the shapes, the fabrics were a bright, fun group to work with.

Giveaway!

You can win a bundle of 8 - 10 fabrics from the Modern Marks line. In the comments let me know your favorite quilt size to make and I will pick a winner Saturday, December 2. Sorry, giveaway is only open to US residents.

Please make sure to leave your email address, as I have had winners in the past who didn't receive their prize, because they were a no-reply commenter. Ex. patternsbyjen(at)gmail(dot)com

Gradient Stars

Introducing the newest pattern from PBJ: Gradient Stars

Made from 18" blocks, this quilt comes in three different sizes; 46" x 64", 64" x 82", 82" x 100" (above).

It started off as a simple sketch.

When I put that into a program, I felt it was too simple.

So I added more.

Then changed what I added.

When adding color we get this beautiful block that, when put into a full quilt, becomes a beautiful quilt.

Gradient Stars uses two rulers from Deb Tucker's Studio 180 Design (no affiliation). The Corner Beam® and the VBlock®.

When made in just one color the whole pattern changes.

Enjoy these quilts from the testers.

Karen's version of Gradient Stars is bright and beautiful.

Brandy's quilt adds the coolness of winter with her Santas.

Julie used this gorgeous grey as her background. It really sets off the stars.

Victoria changed hers up a bit. I love it set on point. Next week she will share how to change up a pattern to make it yours.

Gradient Stars is now available as a digital download from Craftsy and Etsy, at a special price through July 10th. Paper patterns will be available July 10th from Etsy.

Happy Stitching!
