August 2020 Monthly Color Challenge

Welcome to the "dog days" of summer. This block is super easy so you can get it done and then just fan yourself while drinking iced tea.

Inspired by their gracious flight, unique and sometimes vibrant color, I chose birds to guide us in our challenge this year. To see the full year in preview read the 2020 Monthly Color Challenge Announcement.

Our color this month is based on my favorite bird of all, the flamingo. My quilting studio is a mish mash of Steelers and flamingos. It's pretty much guaranteed that I will receive something flamingo for my birthday, Christmas or just because, and I'm not complaining! For our honeymoon my husband and I stayed at the Flamingo in Las Vegas. The love affair is real.... for both flamingos and my husband. Hahaha

Lets learn a little bit from The Spruce about my favorite flamingo.

They have a life span of about 40 years.  Their weight varies from 4.9-6.2 pounds, which I assume come mostly from their wings with a wingspan of 50 inches.

Their adorable little babies are born white/grey and don't get their full adult pink color until around 3 years old.

A mated pair of flamingos will have only 1 egg each year. They care for their little hatchling for 3 - 12 days at which point it joins a group of newly hatched flamingos for communal care for the next 75 days.

Click on the link above to find out more about this amazing bird.

Now for the August block, based on the flamingo, and designed with a need for an "easy" month in mind.

The instructions include a How To video, especially for the Color Challenge participants.

This year I am offering instructions for making the background the same throughout with a neutral. You can download the yardage amount and instructions HERE.

  2. I knew about the Steelers and you, but I had forgotten about the flamingo thing - ha! Fun story, and interesting facts. I recall being in Florida years ago at Walt Disney World - the flamingoes kinda roamed free and they were huge! Can't wait to make this block!

  3. My favorite block so far, flamingos! ❤️
